Katie Sciurba has written picture books, magazine articles, and textbooks for young readers. Her work, which includes Oye, Celia!: A Song for Celia Cruz (illustrated by Edel Rodriguez), has been published in the U.S. and in Korea. She has an MFA in Writing for Children from The New School and is represented by Emily Mitchell at Wernick & Pratt Agency.
Dr. Sciurba earned her Ph.D. in English Education from New York University. Her scholarship focuses on two primary areas of inquiry: 1) the reading experiences and meaning-making processes of young readers, and 2) representations of the sociopolitical world in children's literature. Her scholarship has been published by Teachers College Press and in top-tier academic journals.

Katie Sciurba's book reconceptualizes relevance as "the condition of being practically, socially, or conceptually applicable to one's life." Four dimensions of relevance - IDENTITY, SPATIALITY, TEMPORALITY, and IDEOLOGY influence students' reading and meaning-making experiences and enhance their criticality.

Her areas of expertise include children's literature and representations of race, class, and gender; criticality in literacy education; comics in literacy education, popular culture and literacy, reading intervention and support; relevance and literacy education; and writing in K-12 education.

She has worked with schools and districts to develop after-school and summer literacy programs, and she has provided small- and large-scale workshops for K-12 teachers related to diversity and students' identities in literacy practices, incorporating the arts into English Language Arts (ELA instruction), reading/literacy foundations, and other topics.
